This project proposes and explores the value, importance, and dependence on artistic creation as a source of inquiry and investigation, allowing us to visualize the historical period in which we live as societies.
The notion of “Independence” in this proposal must be understood not only as a temporal milestone in our political history, but also as an occupation of the social, cultural, or political realms—dimensions that must be permanently reinterpreted and that are expressed in many forms: the relationships among social actors and cultures, our connection to the land, climate, gender issues, migration, labor, raw materials, globalization, etc., etc.
When researching, inquiring, or investigating, an artistic visual proposal created during a specific historical period can be just as significant as any written or critical source from that time.
The difference between written sources and visual sources does not lie in their usefulness, but in the way they are interpreted and analyzed, for images—just like any written document—contain particular codes that must be understood before posing questions to them.
In this sense, art in all its manifestations continues to be a useful tool—one on which we depend—to analyze the ideologies, thoughts, tendencies, forms of representation, and many other aspects of the thinking and discernment of a society, in this case, our own.
