THE DISCREET CHARM

The film archive treasured by Daniel Schafer (1937–2004) comprises a remarkable collection of VHS tapes and serves today as the starting point for this exhibition. The tapes include his favorite films, recordings of television art programs, various shows, artist documentaries, and more.

The invited artists selected one or several films from the collection, and based on the covers, the tapes, and/or their contents, developed a creative proposal.

The Discreet Charm… alludes to Buñuel’s film (the filmmaker is featured in the archive) and suggests Danny’s own fascination with films, while also referencing the particular charm of Schafer’s complex personality.
