Geometric Paintings

Margarita Azurdia was a pioneering, multidisciplinary, and avant-garde artist who played a defining role in twentieth-century Guatemalan art. Over the course of four decades, her artistic practice embraced every medium her boundless creativity and artistic freedom led her to explore: painting, sculpture, writing, poetry, and performance art.

During the 1960s, Azurdia created the body of work known as Geometric Paintings. These large-scale works feature highly simplified compositions built from diamonds, lines, and flat fields of color. Through their bold contrasts, they radiate remarkable strength and visual energy, generating a dynamic optical experience. For many of the artist's contemporaries, as well as later critics, these symbols and geometric patterns also draw inspiration from the woven structures and textile traditions of the Maya communities of Guatemala.
