Threads of Memory
Threads of Memory is an exhibition that brings together eight women artists—Mónica Torrebiarte, Paola Beverini, Sofía Novella, Mirella Beverini, Emilia Torrebiarte, Silvia Tenenbaum, Estefanía Valls Urquijo, and Clara de Tezanos—interwoven through creative affinities, friendship, and a profound sensitivity to themes of memory, identity, and transformation.
This exhibition transcends the mere presentation of artworks to explore how emotional bonds and personal experiences shape artistic narratives that engage with collective memory, existential transience, female resilience, and the broader theme of human movement. Through a range of media—photography, printmaking, painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, bio art, video, and installation—the artists weave a conceptual tapestry that merges tradition and innovation, challenging the boundaries between the intimate and the universal within the context of contemporary art.
Threads of Memory is built upon the metaphor of weaving as a paradigm of human and cultural interconnectedness. Inspired by Guatemalan textile traditions—symbols of identity and resistance—the curatorial concept delves into how emotional ties and artistic collaboration function as guiding threads that transmit knowledge, experiences, and worldviews. All participating artists are part of a broader human movement whose families migrated to Guatemala, enriching their practices with layers of transnational memory and diaspora.
The artists address themes such as the poetics of memory as a repository of existential metaphors, the ephemerality of life, femininity as a transformative force, the hybridization of the traditional and the contemporary, and displacement as a condition of modern existence. This exhibition celebrates expressive diversity while also inviting critical reflection on the role of women in the preservation and reinvention of cultural narratives. By interweaving the intimate with the collective, the show positions art as a space for healing and empowerment, where friendship becomes an act of creative collaboration and solidarity.
Within a landscape in which Latin American women’s art is gaining visibility—driven by movements such as decolonial feminism and global platforms that amplify silenced voices—this exhibition proposes a profound reading of creativity as an act of collective weaving.
Far from being a mere aggregation of individual works, Threads of Memory values collaboration as a transformative praxis: united by friendship and the shared legacy of migrant families, the artists weave not only textile threads but also networks of resistance and transnational memory that reconfigure the artistic canon. This collective vision elevates female creativity from the periphery to the center, recognizing its power to heal historical wounds—from diaspora to patriarchal oppression—and to forge inclusive narratives that engage with global urgencies such as migration and climate change.
In this way, the exhibition not only highlights Guatemalan talent within the Latin American context, but also positions art as a tool for community empowerment, inviting the public to actively participate in this living tapestry of interwoven identities. Audiences are invited to reflect on the power of these threads to reimagine the cultural future of Guatemala and Latin America.
