Guatemala, 1916-2002

He studied photography in New York (1935). He had personal exhibitions in Guatemala and Argentina. In 1949 he was invited by the prestigious curator José Gómez Sicre to exhibit his work at the First International Exhibition of Latin American Photography at the Panamerican Union and the Museum of Northern Arizona, along with artists such as Lola Alvarez Bravo, Martín Chambi and Alfredo Boulton. He participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions in Guatemala and abroad until 1965. After that, he voluntarily decided to move away from public exhibitions, although he continued to carry out his work.

 

In 2008, the rescue and enhancement of its photographic archive begins, through an in-depth investigation that resulted in the publication of the book Julio Zadik, a modern photographer in Guatemala: 1937-1965, with texts by José Antonio Navarrete and Valia Waiter. This publication and the monographic exhibition that accompanied it, catapult him again, allowing him to occupy the place he now has as a pioneer of modern photography throughout the Central American region, and recognizing him as a photographer of relevance in Latin America.

 

His artwork is housed in the collection of the Photo Library of CIRMA, Antigua Guatemala and the Museo del Barrio in New York, as well as numerous private collections in Guatemala and abroad.
